BLURTLE™: The Ultimate Blurt Battle Card Game

BLURTLE™ – The Ultimate Blurt Battle by Erica Jonasson is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud card game built around a simple idea: think fast and say it first. Players flip a card, react quickly, and “blurt” out a word that fits the prompt. It sounds easy, but under pressure, it quickly turns chaotic in the best way.

As Erica puts it, the game is “simple yet addictive,” with the real fun coming from “the pressure, reactions, and tongue twisting moments.” It is designed for all ages, making it an easy go-to for families, friends, and parties.

How BLURTLE™ Card Game Was Created

This is Erica’s first card game, and the idea goes back years. She originally played a similar version with friends in high school and college using a regular deck of cards. The concept was informal but memorable. Flip a card, shout a word, and try to beat everyone else to it.

“It was always fast, chaotic, and full of laughs,” she says.

Later, when she tried to find a game built around that same idea, nothing quite matched what she remembered. Instead of waiting for someone else to make it, she decided to build it herself. That decision became the starting point for BLURTLE™.

To turn the original idea into a full game, Erica added more variety. The deck now includes number, word, and color cards to keep gameplay dynamic and unpredictable.

Family game nights played a big role in shaping the final version. The goal was to create something that anyone could pick up and play without a long learning curve. That focus helped make BLURTLE™ feel inclusive, quick to start, and easy to replay.

Designing BLURTLE™ and the Blurtle Bird

One of the most recognizable parts of the game is the Blurtle Bird. The idea came directly from the energy of gameplay. Erica explains that it reminded her of “a group of people all squawking and shouting at once,” which made a bird feel like the perfect fit.

Since she did not have an art background, she worked closely with Shuffled Ink’s designer to bring the idea to life. “What started as a rough idea became a fully realized, professional design,” she says, crediting the collaboration for helping shape the final look of the game.

When the first deck arrived, Erica immediately tested it with her family. That moment became a turning point.

“Within minutes, everyone was laughing nonstop, getting competitive, and even creating their own fun twists to the game,” she says. It quickly confirmed that the concept worked the way she hoped it would.

Seeing people genuinely enjoy something she created made the entire process worth it.

Challenges Creating a Card Game

One of the biggest challenges was not the gameplay itself, but explaining it clearly. Erica found that writing the rule card took multiple rounds of revision.

“The game itself is simple, but clearly communicating the rules… was more difficult than I expected,” she explains.

Each time someone new read the instructions, she found small areas to improve. Feedback played a big role in refining the wording until everything felt clear and easy to follow.

As a first-time creator, Erica learned quickly that waiting for everything to be perfect can slow you down. Her advice is direct: “Don’t get stuck in analysis paralysis.”

She emphasizes that taking action is more important than getting every detail right from the start. “At some point, you have to move forward and share your idea,” she says. “Otherwise it never truly has a chance to succeed.”

What’s Next for BLURTLE™

BLURTLE™ has just launched, and Erica is focused on getting it into more hands. Her immediate goal is to reach 100 orders and begin placing the game in local shops.

She is also exploring different ways to grow awareness, from social media to in-person game nights. The early stage of the brand is all about building momentum and community.
