From Prison to Possibilities: A Mentorship Card Deck for Second Chances

Dr. Kim Nugent, Ed.D., is an educator, mentor, and author dedicated to helping individuals build brighter futures. Her latest project, the From Prison to Possibilities card deck, was created to support her mentorship program for incarcerated individuals. Each card reinforces weekly principles in a way that is interactive, memorable, and fun—helping participants strengthen employability skills and prepare for reentry into society.

A Teaching Tool with a Twist

For Dr. Nugent, the deck is more than just cards—it’s a learning tool.

“I wanted to find another way to reinforce the weekly principles that would be fun and stick,” she explains. With years of experience teaching and mentoring, she understood that adults have different learning styles, and a hands-on, visual tool could make all the difference.

The card deck’s design stems from Dr. Nugent’s book, From Prison to Possibilities, using the title and cover art as the foundation for the project. The cards serve as an extension of her written work, providing a new way for individuals to engage with her lessons.

Dr. Nugent says her favorite part of the project has been introducing the deck to others. “I get so excited to introduce the concept and see how they adapt it,” she shares. Watching participants engage with the cards reaffirms the importance of having tools that are both practical and empowering.

A Motto to Live By

Her guiding principle—“I believe in second chances”—is woven into every part of the deck’s purpose. By encouraging participants to reflect, learn, and plan for their futures, the cards embody her belief that transformation and growth are always possible.

For those interested in creating their own custom card decks, Dr. Nugent offers a simple but powerful piece of advice:
“Think through what you want to accomplish.”

Her project is a clear example of aligning design with purpose—ensuring that the deck doesn’t just look good, but also creates meaningful impact.

Choosing Shuffled Ink

When it came to selecting a manufacturer, Dr. Nugent turned to Shuffled Ink.

“I liked the way you were so upfront on the process,” she says. From start to finish, transparency and support were key in helping her bring her vision to life.

While her deck is still in its early stages of distribution, Dr. Nugent plans to make it available for purchase soon, ensuring that others can use this tool in mentorship programs, classrooms, and personal development settings. Her broader goal remains the same: to expand her impact and continue advocating for second chances through education and mentorship.
