HanaFooda Hawaii Grinds: A Deliciously Playful Card Deck Honoring Culture, Family & Food

A Taste of Hawaii, A Touch of Nostalgia

HanaFooda Hawaii Grinds isn’t just a card game—it’s a heartfelt tribute to family, food, and heritage. Inspired by childhood summers in Lahaina, Maui, and long, delicious meals shared among generations, this deck was lovingly designed to celebrate the flavors and traditions of Hawaii through the lens of playful, food-themed art.

Created by a digital artist and mom balancing work and life, HanaFooda fuses the visual style of traditional Japanese Hanafuda cards with iconic Hawaiian dishes like spam musubi, saimin, and shaved ice.

A Deck Rooted in Story & Resilience

At the heart of this project lies a deep connection to the creator’s father and his hometown of Lahaina—tragically devastated by wildfires. Creating HanaFooda became an emotional journey of healing and remembrance. “It was part tribute, part therapy — a way to preserve my own family memories and celebrate Hawaii through local food culture and games.”

What began as a personal project to gift family members grew into a marketable product now sold across platforms like Etsy and the Japanese American National Museum store, with more vendors soon to come.

The deck design pays homage to the Sakura-style Hanafuda cards often used in Hawaii while introducing a fresh culinary twist. Every card features illustrations of local dishes, drawing attention to Hawaii’s unique cultural melting pot shaped by generations of immigrants and plantation families.

Each card is digitally illustrated using Adobe Illustrator—a tool the creator actually learned in the process. With a background in digital art but no prior experience designing card decks, the project became a self-taught masterclass in creativity, UX design, and production logistics.

Built with Late Nights and Love

Balancing motherhood, a full-time job, and creative passion, the d

eck was crafted over the course of nearly two years—often late at night, on weekends, or during stolen lunch breaks. From art to manufacturing, everything was managed with incredible intention.

The response to HanaFooda has been overwhelmingly positive, especially from those familiar with Hawaiian and Japanese culture. One of the proudest moments? Having the deck featured by the Japanese American National Museum and accepted into their holiday catalog.

Coming soon: the deck will debut in person at the 4 Days of Aloha Festival in Vancouver, WA—one of the largest Hawaiian cultural celebrations in the Pacific Northwest.

Why She Chose Shuffled Ink

Finding the right manufacturer was no easy task. As a first-time card creator, she approached the process like a research project—digging into blog posts, Reddit threads, artist forums, and side-by-side reviews. Her priorities were clear: she needed a trusted company with proven card-making experience, flexibility for a 59-card deck, small-batch options, and reliable customer support.

She narrowed it down to two: a well-known Hong Kong-based manufacturer and Shuffled Ink. While both offered competitive pricing and high-quality cards, communication made all the difference. With overseas companies, response times often took days or even weeks—a challenge that could stall production and leave a first-time creator overwhelmed.

In contrast, Shuffled Ink stood out immediately. “From the very first interaction, I felt supported. Their team was responsive, professional, and incredibly easy to work with. Even as a beginner, I never felt out of my depth—Shuffled Ink made everything feel possible.”

The added benefit of fast, domestic shipping, the ability to accommodate custom sizing, and an intuitive design process made Shuffled Ink the clear choice. She felt confident entrusting her labor of love to a U.S.-based company that truly understood her vision. “I’m proud to put these cards in the hands of poker collectors, Hanafuda players, and design lovers—because I know the quality is top-tier.”

Dual-Purpose Design: Play Poker and Sakura

One of the deck’s standout features is its dual-purpose gameplay. It’s designed to work for both traditional poker and the Hawaiian version of Hanafuda called Sakura, with beginner-friendly instructions included. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, HanaFooda offers an approachable, culture-rich experience.

Looking ahead, the creator’s focus is on growing a supportive community around HanaFooda, sharing insights on the creative journey, and expanding reach to stores and cultural centers that celebrate Japanese-Hawaiian fusion. With more card ideas brewing, there may be future editions on the horizon.

“My dream is to create financial flexibility, build a steady side income, and spend more time with my kids as they grow up.”
