This was Steven and his wife’s first card project, and they tackled every step in-house—from concept and illustration to layout and print prep. With backgrounds in art but little experience in product development, they immersed themselves in learning design software like Illustrator and Photoshop, producing countless rough drafts on a home printer before finalizing their vision.
The inspiration behind Hero’s Ascent is deeply personal. Influenced by therapy models such as Internal Family Systems and Polyvagal Theory, the couple aimed to craft something grounded and approachable—especially for those who may not connect with traditional self-help methods.
“We built this for the people who might not pick up a workbook but would pick up a card,” they explained. “And for the ones who need healing that doesn’t feel clinical—something imaginative, gentle, and still deeply therapeutic.”
From First Draw to Deep Impact
Since launching, the response to Hero’s Ascent has been nothing short of magical. Steven recalls a moment when a therapist used the deck in session. The client picked a card, paused, and asked, “Are they all like this?” It was exactly the message they needed.
